Crowns and Bridges
Crowns
A crown (cap) covers the entire tooth, restoring its shape, size, and strength when it can’t be repaired with fillings.
Types: Porcelain crowns are most popular since they look natural, are durable, and match the color and shape of your teeth.
Reasons for Crowns:
- Broken, decayed, or fractured teeth
- Large fillings

- After a root canal
Procedure: Usually requires two visits—first for impressions, tooth preparation, and a temporary crown; second for placing the permanent crown.
Bridges
A bridge is a fixed appliance used to replace one or more missing teeth. It consists of crowns on anchoring teeth connected to artificial teeth, filling the gap.
Reasons for Bridges:

Procedure: Typically two visits—first for tooth preparation and impressions, and placement of a temporary bridge; second for fitting and cementing the permanent bridge.

Dental Emergencies
Dental emergencies can be painful and need quick treatment to relieve discomfort and save teeth. Common issues include knocked-out teeth, lost crowns, broken teeth, and loosened teeth. Prompt care can make all the difference.
Avulsed (Knocked-Out) Tooth
- Call our office immediately.
- Rinse the tooth gently—don’t touch the root.
- Place back in the socket if possible, or keep in milk/saliva.
- Get to our office quickly; reattachment is most successful within an hour.
Lost Filling or Crown
- Call us to schedule care.
- Save the crown if possible.
- Use dental cement (from a pharmacy) for temporary relief—never glue.
Cracked or Broken Tooth
- Rinse mouth and tooth fragment with warm water.
- Apply gauze if bleeding and a cold compress for swelling.
- Cover with dental cement if needed until seen by a dentist.
Loose or Dislodged Tooth
- Call our office right away.
- Use a cold compress and OTC pain relievers for comfort.
- The dentist may reposition and stabilize the tooth; root canal may be needed if healing doesn’t occur.
